Thirty-two Smith Moore Attorneys Named "Best in America"

September 13, 2007

GREENSBORO, NC – The 2008 list of The Best Lawyers in America will include 32 attorneys from Smith Moore LLP, the most ever from Smith Moore.  The number of Smith Moore lawyers named to the prestigious annual listing is the fifth highest among all law firms in North Carolina, according to the publisher of Best Lawyers. The listing is scheduled to be published in December of this year.

Best Lawyers recognizes attorneys for outstanding client service, professional reputation and performance in the various areas of law on which they focus their practices.

Best Lawyers ranks Smith Moore in the top 20 law firms in the U.S. and in the top five in North Carolina, in 23 different categories, based on the number of attorneys named to the 2008 listing whose practices focus on those areas.  Areas in which Smith Moore received a top 20 national ranking include Appellate Law (fifth in the U.S., first in North Carolina); Non-profit/Charities Law (fifth and first), Mass Tort Litigation (sixth and first); Land Use and Zoning (eighth and second); Health Care Law (tenth and second); Environmental Law (12th and third); and Labor and Employment Law (19th and third).

"This is a testament to the hard work of our attorneys and to their outstanding reputation among their peers," said Steve Earp, managing partner of Smith Moore.  "The fact that the list of attorneys from Smith Moore continues to grow is an indicator not only of our success in providing quality service to our clients, but also of our focus on continually furthering our capabilities."

Among the Smith Moore honorees is Greensboro Attorney Charles Melvin, who has been named to the Best Lawyers list more than 20 times, and 12 attorneys who earned the distinction of being named to the list at least ten times.

The Best Lawyers list is based on nearly two million detailed evaluations of lawyers by their peers.  The evaluations are primarily completed by attorneys listed in the previous edition of Best Lawyers, who participated in surveys to assess candidates for the 2008 listing, and then voted based on each nominee's individual merits.

The following Smith Moore attorneys will be included in The Best Lawyers in America 2008, with (10) designating those who have been recognized for at least ten years, and (20) designating Melvin's listing for at least 20 years:
