Smith Moore Leatherwood Attorneys Discuss Cyber Security and Data Breach Issues at ACC Charlotte Meeting

February 9, 2015

Marc Tucker, Patti Ramseur, Brett Hanna, and Dee Dee Lott (Compass Group) were panel members at the February 4th Association of Corporate Counsel Meeting in Charlotte, discussing data breach and security issues. In addition, Fred Wood moderated the discussion.

We are all familiar with Benjamin Franklin's infamous quote about death and taxes. Now, centuries later, in today's high tech world, we face a third certainty in life – a data security breach. The Bank of America, Target and Home Depot cases grab headlines, but data security breaches affect businesses of all sizes and across industries. Data, in any form, has value to someone and no business is immune from a potential breach.  The panel discussion reviewed best practices companies can take to protect their valuable electronic data, steps that companies can implement in response to a data breach, the allocation of risk in contracts, and cybersecurity insurance.
