Smith Moore Announces Five Attorneys Promoted to Partner

ATLANTA, Ga. / RALEIGH, N.C. / GREENSBORO, N.C. - Smith Moore LLP announces the promotion of five attorneys to partner. Attorneys elected to join the partnership include Allen Buckley in the firm's Atlanta office, Manning Connors and Phil McCann in the Greensboro office, and Shannon Joseph and Patricia A. Markus in the Raleigh office.

Allen Buckley's business practice emphasizes ERISA, tax, qualified and nonqualified deferred compensation and pension plans, employee benefits and executive compensation. He also has extensive experience in ERISA litigation and is a certified public accountant.

Manning Connors has substantial experience litigating a wide variety of matters, including business and commercial cases, catastrophic injury cases, professional malpractice actions, and insurance-related issues. He has appeared in state and federal courts throughout North Carolina.

Shannon Joseph's practice focuses on complex commercial litigation. She has represented both large corporations and individuals in cases involving claims of unfair competition, trade secret misappropriation, contract disputes, patent and trademark infringement, and antitrust violations, among others. She has appeared in state and federal trial courts throughout North Carolina and has argued cases in both the N.C. Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of North Carolina.

Patricia A. Markus focuses on health care regulatory and patient care matters for physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers. She currently is assisting a number of health care providers with HIPAA assessment and compliance, and has advised clients on a wide array of issues such as fraud and abuse, EMTALA, medical staff issues, licensure, and tax-exempt status.

Phil McCann leads the intellectual property practice at Smith Moore. He prosecutes patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and regularly advises clients on patent infringement and patent licensing issues as well as management of patent portfolios.
