Jon Heyl is a partner and member of the firm's Litigation team in the Charlotte office.

With an emphasis on commercial litigation, he represents a number of large and mid-market corporate, banking, professional, and insurance clients in state and federal courts, and in administrative proceedings.  His practice includes a range of matters involving contract, vendor, manufacturer-dealer, shareholder, and other commercial disputes; financial services litigation; fiduciary litigation relating to trust administration; antitrust litigation and counseling; and professional liability matters.  His experience also includes tort litigation, in which he has served as first-chair trial counsel in multiple cases tried to jury verdicts. Jon is also certified by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission as a mediator in North Carolina.

Complementing his civil litigation practice, Jon is a member of the firm's Benefit Corporation Team.  This team focuses on exploring and serving the legal needs of aspiring or existing "Benefit" or "B Corp" companies—for-profit entities that seek to better the world through identified social missions and by focusing on sustainability and the "Triple Bottom Line" (TPL) pillars of profit, people, and planet.  Jon serves on the firm's Sustainability Committee, which focuses on implementing social-responsibility practices.

Jon has been active in bar and other professional activities, most recently serving a three-year term on the North Carolina Bar Association Board of Governors.  Jon has also served in other firm management capacities, including serving as Chair of the firmwide Compensation Committee for four years.

  • Represented regional athletic conference in putative antitrust nationwide class action in MDL proceedings relating to alleged antitrust violations.
  • Represented regional athletic conference in putative nationwide class action relating to rights of publicity and use of name, image, and likeness of student athletes.
  • Represented regional medical services company, including multi-day arbitration, over claims relating to corporate bond issuance and interest rate swap derivatives.
  • Represented materials manufacturer in securities action relating to alleged misrepresentations in formation of LLC.
  • Defended large-scale resort property developer in bankruptcy adversary proceeding over corporate financing structure and claims of breach of fiduciary duty.
  • Represented national air carrier in putative class action alleging claims of unfair and deceptive trade practices relating to pricing and charges.
  • Multiple representations in fiduciary and trust litigation, including defense of trustees against allegations of improper trust administration and tort claims.
  • Represented business owners in United States Tax Court against Internal Revenue Service relating to corporate structure, employee stock ownership plan, and alleged deficiencies.
  • Defended regional services company in adversary proceeding in Bankruptcy Court relating to tort and other claims by bankruptcy trustee.
  • Represented national vehicle manufacturer in disputes with dealers in multiple states relating to allegations of violations of state motor vehicle or dealer statutes.
  • Defended international insurance carrier in dispute over settlement payments arising from WorldCom, Inc. and Enron Corp. class actions over bond issuances.
  • Represented national tobacco company in antitrust class action brought by tobacco growers and quota holders relating to federal tobacco program and auction system and in antitrust action involving retail merchandise display program.
  • Defended multiple insurance-related tort actions, including trying multiple cases to jury verdicts.
