Team will focus on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and other sectors within the biosciences industry.
GREENSBORO, NC – Smith Moore LLP, a regional law firm with offices in Atlanta, Georgia, and Raleigh, Greensboro, and Wilmington, North Carolina, has created a new practice focus from its existing practice areas to serve the fast-growing biosciences industry and the burgeoning number of constituent companies and research institutions. The newly developed team will draw on the strength and experience of the firm’s existing practice areas in business, intellectual property, health care, litigation and labor and employment – concentrating this experience on the needs specific to the biosciences industry. Eighteen Smith Moore attorneys with experience working with such industries as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, drug discovery and delivery, clinical research, ag-bio or biomanufacturing sectors, will staff the newly formed Biosciences Team. Collectively, these lawyers will enable Smith Moore to offer a wide range of legal services to members of the increasingly important biosciences industry.
"The southern United States is home to one the largest concentrations of biosciences businesses and research institutions in the country, ranking second in the number of biotechnology companies alone," says Frank McDaniel, the Smith Moore lawyer who will head its Biosciences Team. "In organizing this new industry-specific team, our objective is to create a group of lawyers who not only can bring to bear a wealth of experience and skill sets, but will dedicate themselves to the growth and development of the biosciences industry locally, regionally, and internationally. Without question, it is our dedication to and focus on the needs of the biosciences industry through a team environment that makes Smith Moore’s Biosciences Team so unique."
Kent Auberry, who heads Smith Moore's Business Group, adds, "We have built our biosciences focus around a group of lawyers who are not just experienced in the legal affairs of the biosciences industry, but who are versed in the practical challenges facing biosciences companies and their in-house counsel. We are truly excited about the value-added services we will be able to offer to our existing and future clients."
Among the areas for which the Smith Moore Biosciences Team will provide legal services are business transactions, venture capital and tax advisory services, patent law and other intellectual property management and prosecution, licensing, governmental relations, regulatory matters, labor and employment issues, and business and patent litigation. Jim Gale, another key member of the Biosciences Team, says "Our strategy will be to draw on the collective capabilities of attorneys in all Smith Moore offices. We will emphasize experience and teamwork in reaching common sense solutions to this industry’s challenges, while leveraging where appropriate our extensive industry relationships and knowledge. The breadth of our capabilities, combined with a team-oriented approach, will provide the continuity of services that members of this fast-paced, cutting-edge industry require."
